Flying Scholarships Programme 2020
2020 Flying Scholarships are now closed
For decades, the RAF Association has been running its Flying Scholarship programme, which is currently available to RAF Air Cadets, Girls Venture Corps Air Cadets, and members of the Air Scouts and Air Explorer Scouts.
These scholarships are awarded every year in recognition of outstanding commitment and support by young people in these organisations to the RAF Association. They are presented at the RAF Association’s National Conference, with senior RAF personnel in attendance.
One successful candidate will be awarded a 35 hour flight training course in a light aircraft, covering all or part of the tuition needed to obtain a Light Aircraft Pilot Licence (LAPL). We will also offer five or more runners-up twelve hour Flying Scholarships. Further details will be made available later this year.
2020 applications are now closed.
A look back
In 2019 eleven exceptional young people who wanted to learn to fly were awarded Flying Scholarships, including one 35-hour course and ten 12-hour courses.
Officer Cadet Maleha Khan, who is currently studying Aeronautics and Astronautics Engineering at Southampton University and wants to become an astronaut, won a 12-hour scholarship for 2019. She said: “I’m the first person in my family, all of whom are doctors, to take an interest in flying.”
Del Rowlands, Director of Membership at the Association said:
“Our Flying Scholarship programme is run annually as a thank you to members of the RAF Air Cadets, the Air Cadet Organisation, which includes the Air Training Corps and the Combined Cadet Force (RAF), Girls Venture Corps Air Cadets and Air Scouts/Air Explorer Scouts. They give us their continuous support for fundraising and in so many other areas.
