The Morecambe & Lancaster Branch mission is to provide Friendship, Help and Support for our local members, many of whom live on their own We try to bring some sunshine into their lives. By coming together once or twice a month, perhaps for lunch followed by a talk, members get to know one another. They benefit from a supportive, cordial environment.
The talks are free, but we do have a raffle and the programme is very varied, including military and non-military topics.
Wings Appeal Activities
The Wings Appeal is a core part of our Branch’s activities which raises the vital funds that the Association requires. These are at the same time keeping us in the public eye. Many of our regular members are strong supporters of our collection days. We organise these in the local supermarkets and shopping mall. Members’ assistance makes the Wings Appeal Organiser’s job that much easier. Everyone can play a part in supporting the Wings Appeal: many members have a Home Box or have persuaded a local shop or pub to take one of our collecting tins. Other members have put on stalls at table top sales.
Armed Forces Celebrations
The annual Armed Forces weekend is organised locally by the Lancaster Military Heritage Group, and the RAFA exhibition trailer has participated in this. Branch members and local Air Cadets have supported the trailer and a good time has been had by all.
Armed Forces Day: Morecambe
Battle of Britain Sunday in September is commemorated with a service at our local parish church of St Barnabas. At this service we remember the Few who fought so bravely in 1940 for the freedom of this country. We too remember the Many who supported them: the ground crews, medical & emergency services, naval convoys and Fleet Air Arm and Observer Corps. The families too at home who kept up their morale whilst they waited for news of their loved ones. The local Air Cadet Squadrons, veterans organisations, councillors and the general public come together to remember them.
Members attend other Services of Remembrance organised in the local area, in particular during the commemorations of the 100th anniversary of the First World War. Our Standard is paraded at a number of other services and events during the year.
We participate in local festivals such as Morecambe Carnival and West End Festival and though the weather is often somewhat challenging we always have a good time.
Again these provide an excellent opportunity to keep up our public profile. We need to remind people that we are their local Branch of a national organisation.
Local Air Cadet Squadrons
Committee members often represent the Branch at Air Cadet Squadron events, such as Presentation Evenings, Dining-in Nights and Squadron Balls, and the cadets, in return, give their support to our activities when their busy schedules permit.
We have close links with four local Squadrons: 345 (City of Lancaster), 455 (Morecambe & Heysham), and 2246 (Carnforth). We have a Representative from our Committee for each Squadron who keeps us up to date with what the cadets are doing.
We endeavour to make our social events self-financing. To do this we run a Branch lottery – The Flutter Club. This is open to all members: the draw takes place four times a year. There is a bumper prize in December which is drawn at the Christmas lunch. This lunch is always popular, giving members, who for one reason or another haven’t been able to get to other events during the year, an opportunity to catch up with their friends.
In past years we have also organised coach trips to RAF Cosford, The Yorkshire Air Museum and the National Memorial Arboretum, we hope to do more with help in the future, and there is plenty of scope to widen the social focus should someone wish to arrange other activities!
Join our branch now and encourage us to do even better things.
