This page will be added to, as and when required, to bring up-to-date news of activities and items of interest to branch members.  It will also show where and when any new item has been added to the site.

Please note that the latest issue of the branch newsletter is now available on this site, under the Branch Newsletters menu.

One information for members: due to the normal date falling in the Christmas week, this month’s coffee morning will not be happening.  Therefore the next coffee morning will be on Thursday 30 January.

28 September 2019

Just a quick note to let you know that the branch raised a magnificent total of £1,308.23 at the Wings Week street collections in Huddersfield and Holmfirth on Saturday 14 September.  Sincere thanks go to all members who participated on the day, as well as to the cadets of the Huddersfield and Holmfirth Air Training Corps.  Without their assistance we would not have been able to achieve such a great result.

Full details will be given in the next newsletter, due in the next month or so.

27 August 2019

I have recently changed my computer and, in the process of transferring files across from my old system, took the opportunity to check the email contact details I inherited three years ago when I took over as Secretary.  These are the addresses I use for sending out monthly branch meeting minutes.  I have deleted several email addresses which did not appear to belong to members listed in our latest branch return from Northern HQ.  For this reason, it is possible that some valid details have been deleted.  If you find that you are no longer receiving minutes but wish to go back on the list to receive digital copies, please contact me at and I’ll ensure that you get them.

Special note for serving members:

Nearly half of the members registered to the Huddersfield branch are serving members who pay their dues under the Give-As-You-Earn scheme.  It is most likely that this connection has been made because the individuals gave a local address on joining.  We would be delighted if you serving members could consider making contact and letting us know what you are doing.  In response, we can keep you up to date with what is happening at your home branch.  Just drop a line to the above email and we’ll take it from there.  Thank you.

9 August 2019

Although it’s a month away, we are already planning our participation in the annual Wings Appeal Street Collections in King Street, Huddersfield, and Victoria Street, Holmfirth, to take place on Saturday 14 September.  If you are able to devote any time to assisting our collections at either of the locations, your help will be appreciated highly.  Please contact any committee member, or the Secretary at, to arrange taking part.

28 July 2019

I am delighted that the branch website is up and running once more.  In particular, I draw your attention to the new menu BRANCH NEWSLETTERS which contains the document which I have already been able to pass digitally to those members with emails, as well as printing out as an A5 brochure to send to those members normally receiving their minutes by post.

As stated on the final page, if you have any suggestions or possible entries for including in the next issue – to be published after Wings Week in September – please let me know.  In particular, individual memoirs of service or RAFA experiences would be most welcome.

26 April 2019

Just a quick note to readers to let you know that this site is still active.  Due to recent difficulties, I have been unable to devote the desired time to filling in contents.  However, as discussed at the last branch meeting, I shall now limit entries to the site to branch activity reports every two months.  I shall add the first of these reports next week, after the St George’s Day Luncheon on Sunday 28 April, at which Frank Smith will eventually receive his long-deserved National Presidential Certificate.  Please keep a look out for details.

Although entries will be limited on the site, of course I shall enter any event of immediate significance where necessary without delay.

12 February 2019

Those few of you who read this page may have noticed a sudden loss of input, in particular a piece added last month concerning the award of a National Presidential Certificate to Frank Smith.  We have been informed that all RAFA branch sites last had problems last month – now resolved – whereby any text added since the beginning of the year had been deleted without immediate possibility of retrieval.  The article about Frank will eventually be repeated here, but now with a record of the actual awarding of the certificate, be it at the upcoming conventions in Blackpool or Birmingham.

The main news to pass now is that – for unexpected reasons – the date of the next branch meeting has been postponed from 14 February to 21 February.  Could you please ensure that every member you know is aware of this change?

19 December 2018

I take this opportunity to wish all members (and readers of this page) a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

2018 – which marked the centenary of the RAF – is nearly ended, a year in which much happened within the branch.  We have had problems with our committee make-up, as well as losing cherished members along the way.

Hopefully we can now look forward to a new year with renewed optimism; we may be smaller but we are still functioning.  I wish you an enjoyable and restful festive season and look forward to seeing you all again next year!

Thanks to Mike and Karen Todd

Anyone who came to our last meeting will already know that, for personal reasons, Mike and Karen Todd will not be extending their association membership next year and, in so doing, are both stepping down from the committee posts they hold.  It would be wrong to let their departure go without comment.  For the last six years they have been the heart and soul of the branch: Karen by bringing in a lasting impetus to the branch’s fundraising – never afraid to take a seemingly improbable idea right through to fruition – whilst Mike was the go-to source of stability when things went awry.  Their input will be missed.  Although it was perhaps not always obvious, the branch thoroughly appreciated their guiding forces.  We wish them both well for the future and thank them heartily for all the hard work they put in over the years.  You were an example to us of the positive aspects of RAFA comradeship.

Festive Season Greetings from Joan McCallum

Those of you who have been with the branch long enough will remember that Joan McCallum used to place a Christmas message in the Huddersfield Examiner for fellow members.  Now that this service is no longer available, Joan has taken to passing the greeting through this website.  Her message for this year is:

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all my fellow members of the Huddersfield RAFA branch.  I wish you an enjoyable and relaxing time.

6 December 2018

In addition to the tribute added last week, the text of the eulogy delivered by Don Irving at Tony Bailey’s funeral has also now been added on the Branch News page of this site.

2 December 2018

Please note that a tribute to Tony Bailey has now been added to this site.  You can find it under the Members then Branch News drop-down menus.  If you have any contribution you wish to add to this, please do not hesitate to send your memories/tributes to me at and I will publish the details.

27 November 2018

This doesn’t happen too often, so please mark this down as an achievement.  The photos from the Remembrance Luncheon are already on the Gallery page!  Please use the Members drop-down menu to find the items.  I’m particularly pleased that we now have a photograph of our three WWII veterans – Gordon, Frank & Leslaw – together at a branch luncheon.  You can also find the photographs of the Irving clan – a veritable collection of veterans – coming together in Huddersfield to celebrate Jean’s 80th.

27 November 2018

With sincere apologies I return once more to compiling this website after a considerable delay.  Much has happened in recent times, most significantly the passing of our long-serving committee member Tony Bailey on 6 November.  His funeral will take place at Huddersfield Crematorium on Thursday 29 November at 11.15am.  Members and friends are invited to attend his funeral , as well as coming to Lindley Liberal Club afterwards to mark the life and achievements of this most popular colleague at his family’s request.

I also now have a selection of photographs taken at our highly successful Remembrance Luncheon on 11 November.  These will be added to the site in the next few days.

I am always unsure who, and how often, reads this site.  To this end – and to ensure that I am not writing to myself, now that my loyal reader Tony has passed – it would help if you could let me know that you have read this message.  You can inform me by email or mention it the next time we meet.  Thank you for your help in this.

26 September 2018

For those who only receive branch information through this site, I can now inform you that the situation with the branch has now stabilised.  Since the message dated 7 September we had the further news that our long-serving treasurer Tony Bailey had to resign from the post for fully understandable, personal reasons.  Prior to and during our last branch meeting on 13 September members have rallied round to save the branch.  We now have a full, capable branch committee.  Details can be found on the committee menu of this website.  We can now look forward to doing what we do best, providing support for our colleagues in the RAF family.  I also undertake to keep this site fed with news and pictures; you have my permission to berate me should I fail in this task…

7 September 2018

It is with regret that we inform visitors to this site that the organisation of the branch is currently in turmoil.  Following the resignation Mike Todd as Chairman in July, we must now inform you that his successor Iain McFalls has also resigned from the post and the branch, together with wife Karen, with immediate effect.  For this reason, details of the committee on this website have been amended, as well as removing image references to Iain & Karen McFalls at their request.

We shall be discussing the future for the branch at upcoming branch meetings.  Significant decisions will be reported on this site in due course.  As Secretary and Publicity Officer it is my intention to battle to keep the branch alive, but some influences are outside our control.  Watch this space!

8 August 2018

Many apologies for not being active on this site in the last few weeks.  As mentioned at the last branch meeting, I am having great difficulty in adding items of substance, particularly photographs, to this site.  I have asked for HQ assistance, without response to date.  As soon as I can get it up and running smoothly again, I shall let you know.  In the meantime, I am attempting to keep the Events menu up to date.  It’s the least I can do…

10 July 2018

A mixed batch of information for you –

29 June 2018

A very busy small stall at the Lindley Street Party…

29 June 2018

Today is the start of the Lindley Carnival Weekend in which the branch, as the organisers’ chosen charity, will be involved closely.  If you can find time, we would be delighted to see you at any or all of the events:

13 June 2018

Today marks the 96th birthday of the branch’s oldest member, Frank Smith.  Branch members take the opportunity to pass the very best wishes to Frank today.

Should you not yet have read Frank’s story on our branch census pages, today is a good time to read through his entry on the BRANCH CENSUS menu on this website.  It’s a remarkable record of a remarkable man.

Many happy returns of the day Frank from all RAFA and branch members!

6 June 2018

We have now been informed details of the funeral arrangements for Gerald Taylor, taking place on Thursday 14 June.  The day will be organised in three parts as follows:

We shall be forming a branch escort for our late fellow member at the funeral and the burial.

Gill, Gerald’s daughter, extends an invitation for branch members to join them for all or part of the day.  If possible, she would like to get an indication of the numbers likely to go on to Mirfield.  If you intend to go on to the golf club, could you please let Karen Todd know?  She will then inform Gill.  (If you need Karen’s phone number, please contact me separately by email and I will inform you).

1 June 2018

It is with great sadness that we report the passing today of one of our truly stalwart members – Gerald Taylor.  Gerald was one of our longest-serving members, a fact marked by receipt of his 25 years’ membership certificate and tie from Chairman Mike Todd at our June meeting last year.

Details of his funeral will be made known in due course.
