The RAF Association (RAFA) is a forward looking organisation and a registered charity – with 74,000 members worldwide – providing friendship and welfare support for serving and veteran RAF personnel and their dependants. 115,000 calls and visits were made by RAFA’s network of voluntary welfare officers last year alone.
RAFA – a membership organisation with welfare objectives – works in close cooperation with its sister charity the RAF Benevolent Fund in the provision of welfare support for eligible clients. For example, RAFA provides the volunteer caseworkers to follow up and report on references forwarded by the RAF Benevolent Fund.
On a local basis, the branch’s welfare officer provides continuing support to a number of needy clients in the Huddersfield area. These services range from making befriending calls, to assistance with shopping, doctor/hospital visits and arranging access to council and national support, as required.
The Huddersfield branch also has an enviable record of fundraising for the association, coming up regularly with new ideas to swell the coffers. In recent years members have completed a 70-mile five-day sponsored memorial walk across Yorkshire; organised a town centre pop-up shop; participated in military-themed events and local carnivals. We continue to run a monthly bric-a-brac/second-hand goods stall at Huddersfield Open Market in the summer months. We like to think that although we are relatively small in number, we certainly punch above our weight!
We would be delighted to welcome volunteers to help us in our fundraising or welfare work at any time. Just come up and talk to us the next time you see us out collecting, or contact our Secretary at the email address shown below for further information.
We hope that, as you read further through the links on our website, you will be interested in perhaps joining us. Our branch has been active for over 70 years now. In this period we have been very lucky in having people prepared to give freely of their time and talents in assisting the RAF family. We are always pleased to accept new members in our branch, particularly former airmen, airwomen and their dependants.
However, please remember that you don’t have to have served in the RAF to participate fully in our activities. As long as you share our aims and values, we would be delighted to welcome you as an associate member. Associate members are highly appreciated in our branch, being central to all our activities.
