RAF Families Federation
The RAF has awarded a contract to the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA) to establish and manage a new RAF Families Federation (RAF FF).
The RAF Families Federation has been set up to provide an independent voice for RAF families on issues of concern to them. The newly appointed team will communicate directly with RAF families and gather the information necessary to represent their views to senior RAF staffs and Ministers. This will supplement similar work undertaken by the Army and Royal Navy on behalf of their families.
Using existing HIVE Information Centres as a focal point for gathering information, and working closely with SSAFA-FH staff and established Community Development Workers; the Federation will contribute to community support by providing two-way communication between the RAF and its families.
The Families Federation will conduct regular visits to RAF units and will be kept kept informed of Federation activities via a their website and Federation magazine. The website is a facility to enable families to communicate with each other via the interactive forums and discuss and relay topics of concern or interest to them directly. This can be annonymous or otherwise.
From the RAF FF’s perspective, anyone serving in the RAF together with their respective partner, spouse and/or dependent children is part of an RAF family, whether serving accompanied or not. Parents and close relatives by blood or marriage/civil registration, whose lives are directly affected by the fact that a family member is serving in the RAF, are part of the extended RAF family and therefore entitled to be represented by the RAF FF.
A telephone “hot-line” is available from 1000 hrs until 1500hrs Mon-Fri and will be contactable via the web and e-mail for those who wish to raise issues with them or simply seek advice on a family-related matter.
The Federation will issue a quarterly, hard-copy magazine entitled 'Envoy' to be distributed to units and other target audiences. 25,000 copies will be produced and it is also available on-line. The magazine will focus on issues of concern to RAF families, seeking specialist inputs from policy staffs to ensure RAF families are kept up-to-date with developments. It will supplement the sign-posting on offer via the website. The Federation will also implement a programme of unit liaison visits to meet serving personnel and their families.
