The Flying Scholarship Scheme has become a popular and prestigious element of our increasingly strong connection with the Air Cadet Organisation (ACO) and Girls Venture Corps Air Cadets (GVCAC). The scholarships are provided to thank the ACO/GVCAC for the tremendous support given each year and to help suitable air cadets along the route to gaining their National Private Pilot Licence (NPPL).
The five scholarships normally consist of one overall winning cadet receiving a course of 35 hours flying training in light aircraft, plus four runners-up receiving 12 hours training each. The quality of applications is always extremely high but, this year, selection was unusually difficult, following aptitude testing and interview at RAF Cranwell. After much discussion, the decision was taken to award joint top place to two cadets. Based on previous flying experience, each would receive enough flying training hours, within the Terms & Conditions of the Flying Scholarship Scheme, to obtain their NPPL.
Joint top place went to Flt Sgt Sarah Taylor of 92 (Chorley) Sqn and Sgt Stephen Horrocks of 1969 (Rossendale) Sqn. The remaining 12 hour scholarships went to Flt Sgt Jenny Munn of 1254 (Godalming) Sqn, JUO Terry Musgrove with the CCF (RAF) at Welbeck Defence Sixth Form College and CWO Berkeley Winser of 129 (Tunbridge Wells) Sqn.
This year we also moved from tradition in the choice of flying school. Previously, the cadets have chosen where they wanted to fly but, following two very positive visits to South Warwickshire Flying School (SWFS), we decided that this school not only fulfilled the need for high quality, professional training, but also had ‘extras’; a welcoming atmosphere and a relaxed, more personal approach. We felt it would be an enjoyable and rounded experience, which the cadets would remember for some considerable time.
This year’s Flying Scholarship Dinner, celebrating the cadets’ success, took place during the RAF Association’s Annual Conference in Bournemouth in May. A delightful evening was enjoyed by all, with Commandant Air Cadets, Air Cdre Ian Stewart & Mrs Rosemary Stewart attending as guests of honour. An excellent start to what developed into a highly successful summer of flying.
Course dates were quickly agreed with SWFS and, since then, we have seen all five cadets complete their courses …… and definitely come out smiling! Both Stephen and Sarah have gone beyond the NPPL and are, at the time of writing, a breath away from their Private Pilot Licence. It gives us enormous pleasure each year getting to know these highly-motivated young people and follow their progress through the scholarships and beyond. We need no convincing that the Flying Scholarships Scheme is well worthwhile, but still enjoy such feedback as:
“…a huge thank you for the fantastic opportunity……I had a brilliant time”
“I will highly recommend this scholarship…… thank you to everyone at RAFA”
“I had an amazing and enjoyable time at SWFS”
In a groundbreaking first, TWO air cadets have taken the top prize in a national competition run by the RAF Association (RAFA).
It is the first time ever that judges have awarded joint first place for our Flying Scholarships.
