Up & Away with the Wings Appeal Balloon Race

On Wednesday 16th July the RAF Association (RAFA) is going Up, Up and Away with its first, national Wings Appeal Balloon Race.

What's it all About?

Thousands of balloons will be released in the Balloon Race, each of which will have been sponsored by individuals hoping to win a very special prize.

All money raised through the balloon race will go to the Wings Appeal helping us to provide care and support for the whole RAF family - young and old. The balloon race will give a visual spectacle for the launch of Wings 2008 to be held at four regional venues throughout the UK.

If you sponsor a balloon you could win one of the fantastic prizes including a trip of a lifetime, soaring in a Virgin Hot Air Balloon!

The Prizes

• 1st Prize - A Virgin Hot Air Balloon Package for two People - A trip of a lifetime hot air balloon flight for two. RAFA have teamed up with Virgin Balloon Flights so our winner will have the opportunity to soar high over the open countryside.
• 2nd Prize - A pair of VIP tickets to Shoreham Air Show
• 3rd Prize - A pair of VIP tickets to the launch of 'Brew for the Few' event with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight'.

How do I Enter the Balloon Race?

Already have the balloon and flyer? Read on:

If you have received a flyer and balloon in your Spring edition of Air Mail or your May/June edition of Air Cadet simply fill out your details and return to us in the envelope provided along with your sponsorship money.

Alternatively you can sponsor a balloon online:- follow the steps below to join 'the race' :

1. Click here to visit our online Donations form
2. Once in the form, enter your details on the first page.
3. Select the amount you wish to donate*
4. Select the radio button entitled 'Balloon Race'
5. Click on the button at the bottom of the page to enter your payment details - this will take you to our secure online payment form.
6. Sit back and hope that your balloon flies the furthest for your chance to win.

* There is no minimum donation required to enter your details into the race and sponsor a balloon.

What Happens Next?

All the sponsored balloons will be released at one location on Wednesday 16th July 2008 as a focus for the launch of the Wings Appeal 2008 giving a spectacular display.

All balloons will have a label attached with a unique reference number to identify each owner.

Winds will carry the balloons Up, Up and Away before coming back to land. Any tickets found and returned will be entered into the competition. There's even a prize of £20 for the person finding the balloon that's travelled the furthest - so keep your eyes open, it could be you!

All balloon tags returned to CHQ by 6th August 2008 will be judged purely on distance travelled, the three travelling the furthest will be the lucky winners of our fantasic prizes.

Additionally, we will be holding a media balloon launch at several other locations throughout the UK to publicise the main event. Please watch this space for more details of the locations of the main balloon race itself and the locations for a balloon release in your area, everyone will be more than welcome to attend.

Announcing the Winners

The lucky winners will be contacted week beginning Monday 11th August and will be presented their prizes. The winners will also be announced on the website and in Winter edition of Air Mail and in Air Cadet Magazine.
