2009 Annual Conference

A hugely positive and vibrant atmosphere was predominant at the RAFA Annual Conference which took place in Bournemouth this year. The conference took place over the weekend of May 15-17, 2009.

A contributing factor was the overwhelming support shown for the Association’s new image refreshment and delegates and staff applauded the plans for the new branding whilst looking forward to the bright future ahead.

It began with a rendez-vous dance on the Friday evening in the Purbeck Hall of the Bournemouth International Centre. Musical entertainment was provided by the Band of the RAF Regiment who performed throughout the whole conference weekend.

Conference delegates had the chance to exchange ideas, to meet old friends and build new relationships.

Conference-20096The conference business began on the Saturday morning with speeches by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Glenn Torpy who gave an update on the work of the RAF over the last year and the Minister for Veterans Kevan Jones.

Resolutions were discussed and awards presented by the RAFA President, Air Marshal Philip Sturley and the RAF’s Air Member for Personnel, Air Marshal Simon Bryant.

On the Saturday evening a civic reception was held in the Purbeck Hall by the Mayor of Bournemouth, Cllr Stephen Chappell.

Then, for the first time in several years, Sunday morning brought grey skies and rain to conference proceedings.

Conference-2009But the nasty weather did nothing to dampen the spirits of the serving and ex-serving RAF personnel who attended the Service of Dedication which was held inside the Bournemouth International Centre.

The Band of the RAF Regiment and almost 100 standards took part in the service, which was cConference-20093onducted by the Chaplain in Chief of the RAF, The Reverend (Air Vice Marshal) Peter Mills.
Hymns were sung and prayers spoken as members of the RAF past and present joined together in remembrance.

The Last Post was also played, followed by a minute’s silence and the reveille.
